How to thread a heavy duty Singer serger

When I first got my serger, it came with picture based instructions similar to Ikea. When I started to thread my machine, it was a little confusing on how to do it, so I wanted to create a tutorial to help others avoid getting stuck where I got stuck. Here's how to thread a heavy duty Singer Serger. The specific model I'm using is a Singer Heavy Duty HD0450S. Most Singer heavy duty sergers will thread like this, however if you have another brand you should look up that machine's instructions.

First, you will load your 4 thread cones on the thread holders. The order you will be threading your machine is not left to right. It is by color and you start with red followed by yellow, green and lastly blue.

Starting with Red, take your thread from the cone that is 3rd from the left and feed it through the thread guide. The right hand grabs the end of the thread and left hand grabs about 6 inches up from that on the thread and then slide it through the top cover thread guide. Then pull the end of the thread through the tension dial and behind the hook on the left, and pull It down to loop under the hook with the red dot, then continue to thread through the corresponding red dots. Using your tweezers, feed it through the little hole in the upper looper near the foot and pull the thread through to the back.

Yellow, take the thread from the 4th cone from the left and feed It through the thread guide. Then repeat the steps used to slide it through the top cover guide and between the tension dial, but this time go behind the hook on the right and pull down to loop under the hook with the yellow dot and follow the corresponding yellow dots. When you get to the lower looper, make sure that you position the machine so that the lower looper sticks out as far as it can go. Then pass the thread behind and over the top of that looper. Pull downward on the thread and over to the right to see if it caught on the slot that's on top of the lower looper arm. This is the most difficult part of threading your serger as you will not be able to see if it caught or not, so you will need to feel it. Once you feel that it's in the slot, use your tweezers to pass it through the hole of the lower looper. Bring the thread to the back behind the foot like the previous thread.

Green, take the thread from the 2nd cone from the left and repeat the same steps through the tension dial. Then thread it under both hooks and the over the top of the green dot. Then bring it down and thread it through needle A which is the needle on the right. Once again bring the thread back behind the foot.

Finally Blue, take the thread from the 1st cone and repeat the first few steps. Bring it under the hook directly below it and in between the green and blue dots. Then feed the thread through needle B which is on the left. The bring the thread to the back.

Grab a piece of scrap fabric. Put your machine foot down and run the fabric through the machine. If done properly, you will have a perfect 4 thread serged edge. I hope this tutorial helps you setting up your serger.

Bonus Tip: If you want to change the thread color, without re-threading, cut all of your strings right above the top of the spools. Swap the spools to the new color and tightly tie off all of your strings. Then use a scrap piece of fabric and slowly run the machine. When the knots get to the needles, you might have to use tweezers to pull the them through. This is a quick and easy way to swap thread without fully threading the machine.
